Mad honey, also known as “red honey” or “hallucinogenic honey,” is a type of honey produced by bees that feed on the nectar of certain rhododendron flowers found in Nepal and other parts of the world. The specific rhododendron species responsible for the psychoactive properties of the honey is Rhododendron luteum or Rhododendron ponticum.

The nectar of these rhododendron flowers contains grayanotoxins, which are neurotoxins that can cause intoxicating effects when consumed in large quantities. Bees collect the nectar and process it into honey, which retains the grayanotoxins.

When humans consume mad honey, the grayanotoxins can cause various effects, including hallucinations, dizziness, nausea, and a general sense of intoxication. The intensity and duration of these effects can vary depending on the amount of honey consumed and the individual’s sensitivity.

Mad honey has a long history of use in traditional medicine and cultural practices in the regions where it is found. It has been used for its purported medicinal properties, such as treating gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension, and sexual dysfunction. However, it’s important to note that the consumption of mad honey can be dangerous, especially in large quantities or for individuals with certain medical conditions.

How we harvest Mad Honey?

It is harvested 3000 m above the sea level from the Himalayas. There are rare bees who live above the 3000 m. And the Himalayan bees which is the biggest bee in the world. It is 2 times bigger than normal bees we see in our surrounding. It is a rare type of Honey that hallucinates you.

Mad Honey is harvested traditionally by the honey hunters in Nepal by using man-made ladder and ropes.

This honey contains rich flavors and graynotoxins. It does not need to be processed as it is in its optimal natural form after removing external particles.

Typically, it is harvested in Gaurishankar Region, Western Region (Lamjung), and Mid  Western Region (Rukum and Jajarkot) of Nepal.

We only filter it to remove external particles and packed it in its raw natural form.

Harvesting Season: Spring Season (May or June)

  1. Morgan Davis

It tastes best among all other Honey I consumed. I felt something in my neck when I take one tea spoon of this honey. After taking another dose, I got dizziness.

  2. Herbert Thomson

I didn’t experience any hallucinogenic effects, but the flavor was absolutely delightful.
